If I was wise when young I would have studied Greek. My understanding is that the connotation of debt (to God and Christ for bothering to save us) and sin comes in with the early Christian theologians and Paul, and also with the Hebrew biblicalists. In ancient Greek hamartia was also the "tragic flaw" which was run by one's immutable association with the Fates. Thanks for the query.
then there's the lord's prayer variation. We Catholics asked for forgiveness for our 'trespasses', tho the presbyterians at college and other protestant varieties ask for forgiveness of our 'debts' . .
Isn't there an archaic definition for 'sin' that means 'debt'?
