My dad did a lot of time driving generals to meetings. He would then have time to wander a little and take pictures. Other than a couple, I cannot find them. He also could have been an artist (he did paint a couple of movie theater movie posters) and his letters home had wonderful drawings of Korean women in traditional dress. Also lost, for now. Thanks for reading and your great comment!
Similarly, my Dad was in the service (Army) and was also a great illustrator—nothing as illustrious (pun)as movie posters, but clever and colorful somethings. We release and envision those bits of memorabilia and poetic missives as a red balloon floating in the sky above, ungraspable yet still palpable.

Superb dissertation Steve. So glad the fountain is flowing and literary jewels issue forth unabated and sparkling. Love the photo of the Kurdish tent city and the one of your Dad in service. (Driving a Korean general-that must be another saga unto itself.) "Cumulative Gordian knot of inversions", pretty much sums up the story as is so well illustrated and decontructed in 'Hermes' nottomention the role language and Plato’s infamous gennaion pseudos plays in this here Earth Story we get to wend our merry way through, aorund, or above.
The "ancient relationship between language, holding to your literal word, and divinity" has proved its value over millennia; but it is less valued in some cultures. The Kol Nidre comes to mind. Someone made the claim to me recently that it only applied between God and man; but, if someone believes that they can annul any personal or religious oaths or prohibitions made between oneself and God, how much easier is it to annul oaths or prohibitions made to mere mortals?
I make the mistake all the time of assuming that those with whom I engage have the same fundamental assumptions about life, the universe and everything that I do, only to be found regularly in error!
I remember traveling through Ireland and each old town had a Swearing Cross at its edge, where all deals were cemented. Something important to have the oaths to place at the liminal place, the borderlands of the human habitation.
